Ink Cartridges for Printers
Posted: Dec. 22, 2013
Even though printers have some really wonderful features nowadays, the cost of keeping them filled with ink is almost as expensive as filling up your car with gas at the service station.
So, what is one to do. Well, there are some ways to save on your ink usage and the other option is to get the best deal on your ink cartridges that you can.
I just recently bought a new printer and seems like before I could even get used to it the black ink cartridge needed replacing. So I went out and bought the HP 564 XL cartridge and low and behold it didn't seem to really last that long either. I had upgraded from an HP Laser printer and even though I loved a lot of the new features that the HP Photosmart had to offer, I felt that I couldn't really use it a lot because of the money it was costing me for ink cartridges.
So, I finally took some time to see what I could do about my delimea. I loved my printer, with all it's great features, but I felt like I really couldn't afford to use it much.
I first looked at ways to save ink, other than just not printing. I found some of the following things that I could do:
Utilize Print Preview
I learned to use print preview more to review my documents before printing them. This way I could correct errors and then get by with printing one time. Probably something I should have been doing all along, but old habits are hard to break.
Look For Printer Friendly
When printing from a website I made it a point to look for the "printer friendly" button before printing. The other thing I began doing was highlighting and printing just the paragraph, or so, that I was really interested in having a hardcopy of.
Select Black
I take time to select "black" rather than letting it default to color printing, especially if it is not a document that I am going to distribute to someone else.
Print in ECO-friendly fonts
ECO-friendly fonts are petite and therefore use less ink. If you would like to try the ECO-friendly fonts visit SPRANQ.
Ink Saving Software
There are software programs on the market that state they can save ink when printing. The software eliminates empty space and lets you easily select the segments of a document that you wish to print.
Print in Draft Mode
Change the printer setting to "draft" mode. I really could not tell a real difference in the print quality of normal document printing. The document will print a little faster also.
Turn In Empty Cartridges
Some office supply stores allow you a recycling savings when you bring in your empty ink cartridges. I take mine to a local Office Depot and they allow me $3 per cartridge towards my rewards card. You can take in up to five cartridges at a time. When my rewards card comes it sometimes covers the cost of a new cartridge.
Buy Ink Cartridges Cheaper
The easiest thing I found to do was just find a cheaper place to buy my ink cartridges. I shopped around and found the best deals at 123Inkjets.com.
Another nice thing is that you can order online and just have your ink cartridges delivered to your door.
At 123Inkjets.com you can find cartridges for most any brand and model of printer.

Solving Your Inkjet Printer Problems
Posted: Jan. 14, 2011
Inkjet printers are not as complex as laser printers, so there are less things to break about them. However, due to their low cost they are found in abundance now days. Since they are so economical in nature they are not really built to last.
Manufactures generally make more money in the ink cartridges that we so hungrily consume than they do the printer itself.
Generally problems with inkjet printers fall into to two groups; print quality or communications.
Print Quality
The most common problem that users have with inkjet printers is with poor print quality. The number one complaint is horizontal white lines running through each line of print. Clogged nozzles are the source of this problem. These clogged nozzles aren't dispensing ink.
One method that manufactures are trying to use to solve this problem is incorporating the print head into the ink cartridge itself. This way, each time you buy a new ink cartridge you will also be purchasing a new print head. This might work for some printer owners but not for others. You may have a printer that doesn't have a disposable print head or if the print head in the cartridge gets clogged and you haven't run out of ink yet, what then?
Please be aware that these suggestions are just to give you ideas and assist you with basic inkjet printer maintenance. If you are uncertain about performing any of these repairs or if you feel performing any of these things will void your printer's warranty (if you still have one) then you might want to just go ahead and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service professional.
If you are still interested in a DYI approach, then read on.
Cleaning The Print Head
When the nozzles are clogged you can sometimes fix this problem by taking a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and rub that along the surface of the print head. The alcohol will usually help to dissolve and ink build up that might be the cause of the print head clogging. You might then want to use a paper towel or soft cloth to gently wipe any excess ink from the print head.
When you have finished with this process, turn the printer on and run the printer's built-in cleaning process. Check your printer's manual to learn how to initiate this process.
Paper Dust or Lint
Another problem that can cause the while lines or skips in your print material is paper dust or possibly lint. When I worked in a hospital environment where we had installed computers at the patient bedside we encountered a real problem with lint from all the bed linens, an such, getting into the printers and the PCs. You would be surprised at what a big problem this can be.
With all the electrical contact points that a printer cartridge contains paper dust or other debris can work its way in between the print cartridge and the cartridge housing. This dust can interfere with the printer's instructions to the print cartridge.
To remove this dust we will once again use our alcohol swab to clean the print head's electrical contacts. Unplug your printer before you begin this process. Once cleaned make sure that the alcohol has completely dried before reinstalling the ink cartridge or plugging your printer back in.
Didn't Work For you
If neither of the above techniques worked for you then it may be that a mechanism inside the print head has gone bad and the print head itself will need to be replaced. In this case you will need to contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair tech.
Failure To Communicate
Usually if an inkjet printer suddenly starts printing everything but what you want it too this is some sort of communications problem between your computer and your printer. In most cases, if you simply turn off the printer and the computer that it is connected to and restart both then this problem will go away.
If not, then you are back to calling the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Inkjets Are Still A Good Thing
Inkjet printers are still a good buy for many people. They come with many nice features like copying, faxing, photo printing and light to medium document printing for a very economical price. Just keep in mind that they weren't built to last, especially if you print a lot.
